Jan Phethean’s practice is a dialogue between the diverse forest landscapes of Cornwall and Brasil, referencing the real as well as the imagined. She paints in her studio surrounded by fields, in a tiny clifftop hamlet close to Porthleven, SW Cornwall.
Phethean is a Member of the historic St Ives Society of Artists, an Academician with the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Art in Devon, and a Member of Terra Mater Art (TMA), exhibiting recently at the Tremenheere Sculpture Garden Gallery.

“I feel a deep connection to the natural world, particularly trees, plants and landscape.
My work explores the intersection of memory and place through richly layered brushwork that celebrates the abundance of nature, and its regeneration and growth.”
Jan’s career spanned three decades as an award-winning international interior designer, working on corporate and domestic interiors and in art direction, designing and managing promotional events for global brands and television. Many of these projects were presented with her design illustrations for the interiors, and featured murals designed and painted by Jan. Clients include Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Coca-Cola, Lilt and the Natural History Museum.
